FAQ: Planning ahead while in College

Hi Christine,

It has been a while since we have spoken and I have been meaning to write you. How are you doing? Are you staying warm? I ran into Paul a few weeks ago at the Cal Poly baseball game and he told me you were doing well, which I was glad to hear. We also talked about that 6.5 earthquake we had here!! Can you believe it! I bet you were bummed that you missed the big event. My parents were not upset about me being home for it.

Things are going well though and there were some things that I have been excited to tell you! First of all, I am graduating next fall, which I cannot wait for, and in the spring I am going to Cal Poly at Sea for the quarter and am traveling many of the Asian Pacific Islands, I am really excited and I am think that it will be a great way to end my college experience. I heard that you were in Europe for a while, I have always wanted to go there. But, one thing that I REALLY wanted to tell you is, that I have been thinking more seriously about meteorology.

After I visited you I started really thinking about it and I think that it would be useful to investigate considering this competitive career. I was wondering what your thoughts are. I like hearing what you have to say. I have also been talking to Amy Jacobs from KSBY about making my resume tape, but she has been so busy with life that we really have not had the time to finish it. I am nervous about that. When is a good time to have that complete? When and how did you make yours? I think I am going to have to keep pressuring her! Because I will apply for jobs in the fall. Or do I apply sooner? I was thinking that I would get my degree in communications and then after I have more experience look into Misssissippi State for meteorology. Am I on the right track? I know I probably sound like I am panicking about all this, but in a way it is so close! It is exciting, but at the same time a bit scary knowing that college is almost over and I am about to jump into a whole new chapter of my life.
But, I truly hope all is well with you and you are even more in love with your life then you were when I was there. When you have the time, I would love hearing from you. I miss you and Lollipop!

Hello Rhea!

Great to hear from you....sounds like you are doing great...and you have a great plan.

You do want a tape but it doesn't have to be great. You just need to be able to send something that will show what you look and sound like to get that first job. Don't worry about it being perfect. It doesn't need to be long either. Just ask her if she can have the control room set up the camera for you to practice at the desk or weather wall and roll tape on it. And then just do as much as you can when the tape is rolling.

If you ask really nice the control room might even do it for you. You might be able to just get your own scripts from a newscast to use. Do whatever you can to make the process consume as little of Amy's time as possible. Best not to count on a busy working person to help you out. The more you can do on your own the better. = ) If you are working your butt off without her and are always ready to go....she might feel guilty and help you get the opportunity to make that tape. = )

Again...you really just need 2-5 minutes of tape to get that first job. Also...I'd start sending out tapes as soon as you are ready to go...maybe a few weeks before that. It can take awhile to get that first job, but once you get it they'll probably want you to start right away. Just be sure to get that resume and tape ready well in advance....that can consume a lot of time. Be sure to use very professional looking video tape labels and mailing envelopes too....print out labels and then copy them on a stickyback at kinkos. I've seen news directors toss out tapes will handwritten labels....everything you send out is a representation of the quality of work you will do for them.

Hope that helps. Keep me posted on progress. If this Amy can't help you make a tape you let me know I'll give her a friendly working girl call and ask her to watch out for you. = ) Just make sure you are helping make her life easier as much as possible too.

Your communications degree sounds like a great plan. If it takes awhile to get that first job you can start on the MSU program while you're waiting....and that will also look good on your resume.

Have fun on the ocean...I'm jealous!

Love and purrs from Lollipop too!
