Friday July 15
Christine Clayburg - The game of "catch-up" has begun. My flight back from the East Coast on Amercian Airlines was spectacularly delayed. I was sent to a hotel in Miami and they couldn't get me into LAX until noon the next day. So 27 hours after my expected arrival Paula and Peggy and Veronica pick me up at LAX rather than me picking up them.
Veronica saved the day getting a rental car the night before and finding her way through LA for a few hours of shut eye. The ladies picked up packs and gear before I arrived and then we picked up the rest of the gear out of storage. We weren't on the road until 4pm, rather than the 10am I had planned for! A long drive up the 5 to Sacramento got us in very late.
Saturday July 16
We meet Stephanie and Paul at the Sacramento airport and make a run to REI for supplies and to meet Margo. Then we are on our way. Things are going well, but shortly after arriving at Grandma's. Stephanie got a call with news that her mother who is undergoing chemo for cancer had taken a turn for the worse. After a frenzied search for a flight we managed to get her on a flight out of Redding the next morning. We were so sorry to see her go, but glad that she had gotten the news before we we're on the mountain, and we were all so glad to get to know her to, as Peggy promised - she is a kick.
Stephanie had made bracelets for all of us and we are taking them to the summit.
Sunday July 17
We all took Stephanie to the airport to see her off at 6:55 am. She said she felt so badly that we had to get up so early... but it was actually a blessing... because it's 9:30am and we still have a huge mess in Grandma's living room.
We go to The 5th Season in Shasta and then we will drive to the trailhead. We hope to start hiking a bit after 12. A bit later than hoped, but not a problem. One must always plan time for life's unexpected up's and down's. Sometimes the hardest part of climbing the mountain is just getting to the mountain.
Stephanie and her mom will be in all our hearts and prayers all the way to the summit and back.

.....Hi Paul, Karen, and Jack J Everything's going very well and we are just moments away from finally loading packed backpacks in the car and heading out for our final destination--the mountain. Everyone is really feeling the excitement of hitting the trail today! Our group seems to have gelled instantly; I feel like I've known these women for so long. What a dynamic group of fun ladies. Kinda reminds me of the Chelsea women!
.....This is going to be such a great personal growth experience for each of us, and our feelings of doubt or question as to whether we can all make it are fading. Our experienced climbers are so encouraging to the rest of us. Christine has put together a positive, unique group of wonderful women. There is such a team feeling. PS I've got my Stonehenge bracelet on, girls J

Hello everyone, thanks for tuning in. According to local legend, this mountain is very sacred, a place to go to when you need to feel spiritually uplifted. Right now we are sorting through the mountain of gear and clothing and food.. there are piles and piles all over Christine's grandmother's living room. (Your worst nightmare Mother hah)
.....
Please don't worry Mom, these guys are all pros. Paddy, you were right, this will be good for me. Timmy, you need to be our next guide for a fishing trip to Montana. Timmy and 7 women, yea.
.....
The sad news is that we had to lose my dear sweet, friend Stephanie. She flew in yesterday, and started sorting through the mountains of gear, and then she checked her messages on her cell phone. Her Mother is suffering from cancer, and took a bad turn. Stephanie flew home about two hours ago. We feel a tremendous loss, as typical of Steph, she was fully in the moment with each and every person here. We have all bonded, and know what we will be missing without her along. She makes every adventure loads more fun, and she always infuses everyone with her warmth and wit.
.....Steph, I want you to know that you are in our thoughts are prayers as we ascend this glorious snow white masterpiece. I will follow your advice about the wind through the trees, and start sorting through your fishing gear.
.....
Love to all, and female friends, please check out the other adventures for "Women Outside."
Love,
